PLANS for the much anticipated but much delayed new shopping centre to be built in Benidorm took another important step forward last week, said Town Planning Councillor Lourdes Caselles. The Ministry of Transport and Urban Works has approved the modification of the area set aside for the project, in collaboration with the developer and the town council. However, there are still other barriers to overcome, including suitable access roads that will not impact negatively on nearby residents or flora and fauna. These need to pass an environmental impact test before being approved at which stage the development should be able to begin in earnest. The anticipated completion date as things stand is 2022. The new centre will be the first in Benidorm itself (there is a large one at nearby Finestrat) and aims to be the most sustainable in the country.
