Hiking enthusiasts are being invited to take part in a guided traverse of the iconic ‘Ice Mountain’, which runs between Albir and Benidorm, as part of a European celebration day.

The eight kilometre crossing of the Sierra Gelada mountain, which forms the majority of the National park of the same name, takes place later this month to celebrate European parks Day.

Participants must be of a moderate fitness level, as the hike takes in a route from the Albir Faro Visitor Centre up to the Alt del Governador Antennas at 438 metres, before traversing a zig zag route across the seven peaks of the mountain, on a hike expected to take around five hours.

The event, which takes place on Sunday May 19th, allows hikers to witness beautiful views of coast and mountains considered to be amongst the most spectacular in the province.

Walkers will be guided along the route by park employees, who will also accompany them on the return journey by the public number 10 bus.

Owing to the level of difficulty, the event is not suitable for children under 16 years of age and participants must wear appropriate footwear clothing and sun protection and bring water and snacks.

A further activity has also been organised for Saturday May 24th, involves an informative guided walk to the famous Albir Faro.

Attendees will be given ample time to discover the flora and fauna of the area, including rare and endangered species, on the three hour walk.

Appropriate footwear, clothing and protection should be worn and water should be taken along for the walk.

Anyone wishing to take part in either event, should register as soon as possible through the email address serragelada@gva.es, as places are limited.

The European Conference on Parks Day, which falls on May 25th this year, aims to act as a call to reconnect with nature and to value the most important natural treasures of each Natural Park.
