BATS are to be used by Almoradi council in the annual battle against mosquitoes in a plan carried out in conjunction with the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast.

The Iberian bat feeds exclusively on mosquitoes and can gobble up over a thousand insects in an hour, and bat shelters are being put up around Almoradi to encourage the species to breed.

A lack of bats has led to a large increase in mosquitoes in the area leading to people to resort to chemicals to repel the insects.

Almoradi council officials hope that an increase in the bat population will help to reduce mosquito numbers in a natural and more environmentally-friendly way.
